Mexico could only manage one goal in a 1-0 friendly win against Bosnia in San Antonio on Wednesday night -- the first match of 2018 as the team prepares for the World Cup in Russia this summer.

Mexico were firmly on the front foot from the outset against an inexperienced B&H team, with Giovani dos Santos scuffing an early chance to open the scoring before Carlos Vela skied a shot over the crossbar on 10 minutes.

But for all their dominance in possession and chances, Mexico failed to find the end product and the teams went to the dressing room level at 0-0.

The start of the second half brought more of the same for the host side, but Mexico finally found an opener when Hugo Ayala skipped a perfect header into the far-post netting from a Jonathan dos Santos corner in the 66th minute.

Another goal never came for Juan Carlos Osorio's team, who will look back on the calendar year opener as a story in wasted opportunities before turning their attention to the road to Russia.
