18.15 That seems as good a point as any to sign off and wander off into the late evening sunshine. Tim Sherwood could well be following me after another abysmal showing in a big game.
But the big story today, and this weekend, is Liverpool, who are top of the league with the title in their hands. They go to West Ham next weekend. See you all there.
Quote Manager Brendan Rodgers says: "I enjoy watching them every day, today to take it into the pressure situation and perform like we did from the first whistle, it was an immense performance. You see the intensity and aggression in our pressure to show how focused we are. The mentality going into the game was to be very aggressive in how we play. We’ve shown over the season flexibility in the team – it’s a credit to the players."
Quote Goal scorer Jordan Henderson said: "I think the crowd were outstanding again, they lifted us again right from the off. We knew we had to start really well as we have done, pressing high up the field and winning the ball back as soon as possible. We all dream of winning the Premier League one day, we have to take each game as it comes, it will be difficult going to West Ham next weekend. It’s what we all want, but each step at a time."
Quote Graeme Souness says: "The boy Sterling could be a superstar. I can’t believe how strong he is. He tortured Tottenham today. He’s bullying people a lot bigger than him. I think he’s a star, given his age he could become a worldie."
18.00 Liverpool are now just six games away from a first league title since 1990. It’s not as easy as all that, of course, with victories over the other two sides in the top three – Chelsea and Man City – required to seal the championship but they made it seven straight victories today to move back to the top for the first time since Christmas.
On Wednesday night they looked nervous and uncomfortable against a limited Sunderland side, squeezing home 2-1 after a heart-stopping finale. No such panic today against a Spurs side which surrenders to the top four sides this season as if it’s part of their religion.
Tottenham’s record against the top four sides this season is seven defeats and a draw from eight games, with two goals scored and 27 conceded. They treated Liverpool to two first half goals here – yet another slow start saw Younes Kaboul fall over his own feet and score an own goal, then had a hand in a second presented to Luis Suarez by Michael Dawson.
Coutinho sealed the victory with a third from long range, and Jordan Henderson’s crossed free kicked bounced all the way in for four with a quarter of an hour left. Tottenham were lucky Liverpool declared at four – they looked disinterested before they even got on field.
Full Time Liverpool 4-0 Tottenham
90+1 min Mignolet makes a smart, alert save from Eriksen, down in the bottom left hand corner. Dawson heads the resulting corner over the bar. If only he'd been as good at clearing the danger in the first half.
90 min We're going to have three minutes of added time.
89 min As the first strains of You'll Never Walk Alone start to drift down from The Kop, Soldado decides he's had enough and collapses to the turf clutching his ankle.
86 min Michael Dawson heads onto the roof of the net from a late corner. It's as close as Spurs have come to a goal and it sets off exaggerated celebrations in the away end. The travelling faithful have been rolling out some less than complimentary chants for their players and club during the last ten minutes, and asking the Liverpool players "can you score a goal for us?"
