Smart Media Tokens Explained // Interview with @raised2b - Part One
Hi Friends!
If you are anything like me, then you probably have a lot of questions about SMT’s and how their implementation will actually affect the Steem blockchain.
This is the first part of a two part interview on Smart Media Tokens with @raised2b. He is an IT Professional, and longtime crypto enthusiast. This guy probably spends hours every day consuming content, interviews and news on all things crypto-related – and SMT’s are no exception.
He has the unique ability to understand things on a highly technical level, and then distil the information down in a way that is more easily understandable. (Especially to non-technical people like me!)
I literally had so many questions about SMT’s – that we decided to break it into a two part interview series. Each video is about 15 minutes in length.
Because I am really connected with the Dtube community – we used @dtube as an example to explore how SMT’s might play out in the real world.
Questions Covered in the Interview – Part One
Give us a general definition. What are Smart Media Tokens?
What will this actually look like on Steemit? Will each coin have a separate website, like it is a separate platform, or will posts made in an SMT community show up on our Steemit blog?
Who sets the rules for these communities? Is it the person who starts the SMT? How much liberty will they have to set things up how they want?
We dig into the difference between account based in weight-based voting, and how that might actually play out in various SMT communities.
We also talk about oracles and account verification on the blockchain – and how that might be implemented in an SMT community and on Steemit Inc.
Are these communities open to all, or could someone be refused entry or kicked out?
What is the advantage of account based voting? In the Dtube example, does that mean that my vote would be worth the same as the Dtube’s if they went the account based voting route?
Let’s say someone is interested in building a community via SMT’s. What are they looking at for an investment level? Do they need to put it in a certain amount of money to buy enough tokens to get it going?
What is the current timeline for this coming live? It seems like the roadmap keeps getting pushed back?
Do you have any speculation on the potential roadblocks, or why there have been delays?
Yes, we cover all of this information in only 15 minutes! The second part of this interview is jam packed with just as much information.
Thanks for Watching
I hope you guys enjoyed hanging out with us on the deck while we chat about SMT’s! Keep your eyes open for the second part of this interview coming later in the week.
If you have any questions on what we covered in the interview today – feel free to shoot them below. If I can’t answer them, I’ll ask @raised2b and get back to you!
▶️ DTube
▶️ IPFS
If i understand @raised2b correctly, he is suggesting that e.g. dtube would run separately from the Steem blockchain. That sounds confusing as that would imply that an SMT would run on its own blockchain. I am quite convinced that will not be the case as they need to hold Steem to have bandwidth on the STEEM blockchain. Eager to get to the bottom of this, i am very intrigued by SMT, have a look at my last post to get more inspiration.
Thanks for taking this step, good action, will follow up.
Much love
Yes!! (Thanks for including the youtube link!). I would love to hear @raised2be ‘s thoughts on Blockvault!!
Blockvault looks very intriguing. Honestly, custodial accountability for institutional money in the form of insured cold storage is, in my opinion the next hurdle the crypto world needs to overcome to see the next parabolic price move. If Blockvault executes well on the vision, it's definitely a big deal.
Thanks for weighing in here @raised2b! I’ll keep you you updated on BlockVaults progress
Definitely, it's exciting stuff.
Have you checked out the Quint yet? That's another project I'm super excited about.

I’ll look into it! Thanks!
Thanks @goldmatters!! I'm glad you enjoyed the interview. :) I'll have to ask him about Blockvault and see what he thinks. ;)
As for the YouTube link - i'm glad you appreacited that! I know Dtube and Dlive would probably prefer we don't include them...but I keep hearing a re-sounding message from the community that they want YouTube links added to posts because these platforms can be unreliable at times for playbacks. I've been torn on it for a while - but I think you'll start seeing YouTube links on my posts more often. Maybe not on every music cover...but especially on posts like this where I'm covering information that is helpful to the community.
Good plan! I’m sure overall this is good for dtube and dlive, as great content creators like you continue to expand and bring awareness to these new platform, a little assist from youtube wont dertract i should think.

Really great info. I’ve been studying SMT since @ned announce them months ago. So your boyfriends explanation is pretty spot on from what information we have so far. I will feature this video tomorrow as I feel that new people to steemit can benefit from it. And I must ask what Mic is that I must have it the audio is amazing.
Aww thanks for the support @reseller! Awesome to hear that you've been researching and keeping up on it. I haven't so much and figured there might be a few more people out there like me who have a bunch of questions. :)
For my mic... I use the Apogee Professional Microphone for Iphone/Ipad/Mac
It has a lightening adapter and so it plugs right into my Iphone X for filming. Not sure about using it for other devices though... Anyway, i've been SUPER impressed with it. I have to hold it closer to my mouth when filming outdoors though. Otherwise - the background noise/wind gets too distracting.
Thanks for the heads up, it sounds great. It will only be used indoors for sure. Thanks again.
I really liked this explanation. You guys did a good job with questions and answers. I think the analogy of D.tube was great. This is kind of how I saw it working, so I'm glad to have someone more technical verify what I was thinking.
I also really like the idea of oracles and manageability of the token owner. I think this has great abuse-free implications.
p.s. I think this interview style with @raised2b is great. You guys are a good team. Your personality. His know-how. Perfect way to handle some of the more nebulous subjects here on the platform.
Your comment really made me smile!! I’m glad you enjoyed our dynamic on camera!
I also love the idea of adding oracles, and think that could be a really cool way to fix some of the current issues we see on the platform.
I will be posting the second part of this interview later today. :-)
If you ever have request for other topics you’d like to see us cover, feel free to let us know!
YAY!!! both of you @coruscate & @raised3b on video. !!!Exciting!!!! More of you 2 :) SMT is a game changer.
Thanks @steemcafe!! It's fun to get on camera together! I hope the combination of my "everyday, less technical questions" and his responses will connect with people!
Anyway, thanks for the excitement and the support!
LoL "my boyfriend raised2b" Sounds like you call him like tagt in private too. :D
Still waiting for a "best practice" for Steemit Passwords on steemconnect.
How Do you use steemit on mobile? I use esteem but i am not really content.
Haha, she uses short form and just calls me "boyfriend"
On the Steemconnect front, I trust it, but only with my posting key. If an app using Steemconnect asks for my active or owner key, I don't use it.
Steemit.com is really the only place that I'll put my active or owner key in at the moment.
How can i use steemconnect withe posting? IT alwas wants my active. Which URL Do you use?
Unfortunately, you don't get to make the choice. When an app decides to use Steemconnect as their login tool, then they also decide which level of permission they want to request.
So in this case, if they want your active key, I'd be asking the developer why they need that level of access to my account.
Now, if you use Steemconnect directly to take some kind of action on your account and are not prompted by an app or website, for example, undelegating Steem Power, then it's probably fine, but if an app is using Steemconnect to ask you for permanent permissions, then I'd think really hard about giving anything more than my posting key.
Basically, if you're giving an app your active key, do so realizing that you could easily wake up to find that all your liquid Steem and SBD is gone and only your Steem Power will remain.
If you're ok with that risk, then that's when you'd hand over your active key.
Under no circumstances would I ever hand out my owner key, and I treat my active key in much the same way.
then they also decide which level of permission they want to request. that is a good info. Hope with rising competition they change. I am not willing always keep an eye an my steem dollars.
Do you uses the QR Codes given next to the Password? This would be a smoove way to scan your Active Passwords when you need to transfer funds, without storing them on your phone. I tried it once but did not work. QR code could not be detected.
Thanks for the tip! Your comment cracked me up.
Yeah, I never really understood why some apps ask for your active key, that's an immediate no for me using the app.
On the QR code front, I've never actually tried using it. It would be conveinient though if it worked. I just use a password manager and copy paste from there when I need to.
Hahah I know, it's funny calling him by his username!
By the way, I haven't forgotten about your questions regarding Steemconnect!! I think that would be a great topic to discuss and it is definitely on the list for future interviews.
Speaking of mobile... I met the Partiko (@partiko) developer at the Steem Creators Conference. He is developing an app that is user friendly for people to use Steemit. I have actually been testing it for a few weeks and am really impressed! I'm going to make a video about it later this week I think. It is currently available for android on google play...and should be launched in the app store shortly.
awesome in depth review on SMT's! I'm sure we've all been waiting patiently for their release :D!
Thanks @lpreap!! I'm really glad you enjoyed this interview. :) Even though I've been trying to keep up on SMT's... there's a lot I still don't understand. I'm hoping there are others who would find some of this information enlightening!
hi.. i am soo new to steemit and this was such great info for me , what i dont get is ..when it comes to account weighted voting...how are people going to be checked out to see if they are real people? you could get inundated with checking people and no time for the actual work .
i love the fact that everyone would be equal and personally i don't agree with using bots...i feel like its cheating somehow... but thats just me .
i look forward to your next post ....this is the first thing ive done on steem ...so aplogise if its naive or written wrong ....ive seen lots of stuff on writing and it all seems very overwhelming about how you post and the order you do it in etc .....will attempt a post after an introduction one as i want to do it all properly ....i love steemit ,dtube and the community ...love the idea of everyone working together , decentralised, private and with great content to see, read and interact with. Theres soooo many talented people out there ...thank you for the post you did and you make a great couple.
Ah @raised2b, now I get it! I just heard “my boyfriend to be” which sounded a bit weird. Silly me! 🤪
hahaha that's hilarious! I can totally see how it could sound that way.
Hi,
I am looking for a programmer, who understands SMT and can implement it in my overunity.de and overunity.com forum with using the new elkarte.net forum software.
I am just switching from Simplemachines.org to Elkarte.net open source forum software, that is really great, but these forum programmers don´t have much knowledge about steem and don´t have time to implement it.
Is here any programmer, who knows how SMT works and can help ?
I am also willing to pay for the implementation.
Many thanks.
Regards, Stefan.
Please post a reply here, if you are interested. Many thanks.
