ONE HAPPY KINGDOM
In November 1841 the first meeting of abolitionists took place to abolish slavery in the colonies of the then United Kingdom of the Netherlands.
This meeting took place in Theatre Diligentia in The Hague.
The event “One Happy Kingdom” was a production of “Pasado Presente” (Past Present) to relive the history of the past in understanding the present.
The revenue of this event goes to the Dutch Leeward Islands in the Caribbean Sea that were almost destroyed completely by hurricane Irma in September 2017.
The audience in the theatre was entertained by the performance of an author with knowledge of slavery in Sint Maarten, living history actors, live music, comedy and dance.
It was a mixture of the struggle for freedom and experiencing the meaning of freedom, equality, solidarity and citizenship then and now.
2 December is the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery. It’s a yearly event organized by the United Nations General Assembly and was first celebrated in 1986.
