Silver Sunday - Something Special
Here is a peace of extra special family history silver.
No, I'm not related to the King of England, but my Grandfather did serve in the Royal Navy way back before, and during World War II. I have been entrusted with looking after his service medals, and am planning to have them mounted and put on proud display in my home.
This special medal was awarded to my Grandfather "For long service and good conduct."
Many of the medals from that era were struck in crupo-nickel, but this one was struck in silver. It was awarded to my grandfather in 1944, on H.M.S. Kongon.
The medal could only be awarded after 18 years of service with good conduct, meaning no disciplinary notes on his file, and at the recommendation of his commanding officer after closely scrutinizing of his service record.
A special reminder of what sacrifices not only my Grandfather, but many, many servicemen and women have made for their country.
That's something special on Silver Sunday.
His family must be proud of his Service to his Country and the World. My Father served, in World War II. I salute all known and unknown World War II, Service Members.

That's awesome man. It's a very impressive piece of heritage silver. Put it in an airtight case if you can so you can preserve it.
Thanks mate. The medals have been in a bag way too long now. I need to find a reputable restorer to clean them up and put them in an airtight case. I have other pieces to build into a display case as well... I may post about them sometime too. I'm not sure whether to keep them 100% original and weathered or to replace the ribbons to make it all mew and shiny again. I don't want to lose the sentimental value that way, but would like them to sparkle.... Either way it's a worthwhile exercise for me to do 😁.

It is an awesome piece, which is worth way more than the silver it's struck in. It is quite humbling to hold his medals in my hands, and know I'll never fathom what he saw and was confronted with (both good and bad) during his service. My Dad said he never spoke in too much detail about his expediences, except for a few good or funny ones.

With medals awarded after WWI and especially with WWII medals in Great Britain not many had inscription with the name of the service man on it, so this is nice to see it on your grand fathers medals and I it always makes me smile when people cherish family medals.
