The plant is named after Franz Adam Waldstein, an Austrian botanist. It is also called "barren strawberry" in many places. Waldsteinia originally came from North America.

Waldsteinia grows in many areas. Each type prefers a specific habitat. It is common in northern Asia, Central Europe, and North America. In Russia, it grows in Irkutsk, Buryatia, Krasnoyarsk, and the Far East.
