Acanthocalycium plants grow from about 4 inches to 2 feet tall. The stems can be round or like cylinders. Stem colors range from light to dark green. Thorns or spines cover the stems. This gives the plant a special look.
These cacti bloom in summer, usually after they are about 2.5 inches across. Flowers are medium-sized, around 1 to 2 inches. They are shaped like funnels. The petals open wide. The plant's fruit is a dark green ball, about an inch across. Seeds are big, and their colors range from dark brown to black.
Acanthocalycium plants are easy to care for. Even new gardeners can grow them. Still, the right conditions matter.
The soil should let water pass through it easily. Use mostly dirt from the ground. Mix in sand and small rocks, about 30-40% of the total. The soil should not be too acidic or basic, around 5-6 pH.
Acanthocalyciums like warmth. Keep them around 46-50°F in winter. In spring, keep them out of direct sun. In summer, they need lots of sunlight to grow well.
Water the plant often when it is growing. Make sure water does not sit around the roots.
