Premature ejaculation (PE) is a common sexual issue that affects many men. It happens when a man ejaculates (releases semen) sooner than he or his partner would like during sexual activity. It’s important to know that occasional early ejaculation is normal and not a cause for concern. However, if it happens often and causes stress or relationship problems, it may need attention.

Research shows that about 30 to 40 percent of men experience premature ejaculation at some point in their lives. A study done in 2015 found that nearly 1 in 3 men between the ages of 18 and 59 reported having this issue. This shows that PE is more common than many people think.

There are several reasons why premature ejaculation happens. One of the most common causes is psychological factors. These include stress, anxiety, depression, performance pressure, and relationship problems. When a man feels nervous or insecure during sex, it can lead to early ejaculation. There are also biological reasons. Hormonal imbalances, thyroid issues, and infections in the prostate or urethra can affect how the body works and lead to PE. Some men have low levels of a chemical in the brain called serotonin, which can also cause them to ejaculate faster.

In addition to psychological and biological reasons, certain habits or behaviors may also lead to PE. Overstimulation, high sensitivity, or frequent and rushed masturbation can train the body to ejaculate quickly, making it harder to last longer during sex.

Thankfully, there are simple things men can do to manage or prevent premature ejaculation. One helpful exercise is doing Kegels, which strengthen the pelvic floor muscles and give more control during sex. Another method is the “squeeze technique,” which involves gently squeezing the penis when feeling close to ejaculation, to delay it. Wearing condoms can also help by reducing sensitivity. Some men find that changing sexual positions midway helps reduce stimulation and prolongs intercourse. There are also sprays available in the market that help delay ejaculation by numbing the sensation.

When it comes to treatment, several options are available. Many men try behavioral therapy, which focuses on changing habits and learning how to control ejaculation better. Some medicines, such as SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors), are also used to treat premature ejaculation. These medicines work by increasing serotonin levels, which can delay ejaculation. Topical creams and sprays that numb the penis are another option. Counseling or therapy can be very helpful, especially if the cause is related to anxiety, stress, or relationship issues.

Another modern treatment gaining popularity is the use of the Kegels chair. This device helps perform up to 12,000 Kegels in just 20 minutes. It strengthens the pelvic muscles much faster and can improve ejaculation control.

According to a 2020 study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, combining treatments—such as therapy, exercises, and medication—works better than using only one method. Everyone is different, so it’s important to find the treatment that works best for you.

If you are someone experiencing premature ejaculation regularly, you should talk to a healthcare provider. They can help you understand the cause and guide you to the right treatment. Remember, you are not alone, and help is available.
