Aleksa's Book Review: The Security Consultant's Handbook

in #security6 years ago

We often think of the security consulting industry as a very cool field: Some of us have an image of it being attempts at pen-testing logistics compounds, examining security systems and similar pursuits. However, this book proves me wrong as it's actually exactly like selling fax machines. At least 80% of the book sounded exactly like your run-of-the-mill entrepreneurship & sales book.

I'm not against that in principle, but a book like this would do well to actually put across an idea of what it's like to be in the security industry, which is something that is usually not easy to penetrate for most entrepreneurs trying to get into the space. This reads too much like an airport entrepreneurship book, which just lists all the insights that everybody and their pet chinchilla have heard a dozen times over.

I grew increasingly displeased with the book as it went on, with only passing mention of the security business as such - notably absent is any mention of the regulations pertaining to the security business. Perhaps I expected too much, but this is definitely a wet sock to the face that I didn't expect and that's left me more than embittered with the clickbait nature of even book covers in today's day and age. I suggest you skip this.
