Sculpting a Fetus into a piece of Ashwood
Hey Guys,
its been a while since my last post. Being busy in school, with my children and my partner are time consuming practices. I've also been busy sculpting and playing around with wood, horn/bone, clay and copper. All very different materials with their own characteristics.
My latest most passion inflicting piece has been a human fetus I have been carving into a piece of Ashwood.
In short, for me it symbolizes mother Earth. Plants being here long before humans were, and in many ways paving a suitable environment for our own existance. There as the baby symbolizing humanity and the tree the Earth, it also symbolizes a warning for us and our actions towards the planet.
I do not claim to be a professional sculptor or make any money from what I do, or really know what to do with the work when I am done, I just find the process extremely enjoyable and calming.
Here are a few fotos of the work in progress.
This is the chunk of trunk I spilt into two
After planeing the surface a couple of times, one can see the sapwood, the beginnings of the heartwood and lastly the pith, the darkest of the three colorations.
Flipping the whole thing over, this is where the work begins, sketching up a quick design
and then carrying the rough edges over onto the piece of wood, bark and all.
Carving away the bark, making space for the canvas.
Sketching out the idea
As Leonardo with his David, taking away that which is in the way.
After several hours of chisels, the dremel and good music.
This is as far as I have brought the piece so far. Working on it has been alot of fun. Maybe you enjoyed this brief insight into my work.
Have a great day, and I hope to pop in soon again :D
