Scoliosis: My Childhood Days

in #scoliosis7 years ago (edited)

If you will search online you will learn that "scoliosis" is a condition in the spine in which it curves in sideways. The curve could usually be "C" or "S" curve. And the degrees differ from each condition. The cause is usually unknown. You'll never know you have until you'll notice a difference in your posture.

I was born normal until at the age of two, my mom noticed unusual in my posture. My shoulders were not balanced and then learned from the doctor that I have scoliosis which at that time has no medications nor treatments.

I grew up as a normal child but really timid. I didn't even noticed myself's defect. Aware I have special condition but not bothered about it 'cause I never noticed. Not until other kids would call me "kuba" or "kubs" in tagalog which means hunchback.

Bothered with my condition and as my parents had once told me that maybe I would blame them in the future for not doing something about it, during my 4th grade, I was 9 years old at that time, we began to see ortho doctors to check my condition and see what they could do about it. During those times they were advised that I can undergo an operation but I think it was still an experimental procedure, if I am not mistaken. As I understood then, they will put metal to brace my spine to prevent it from continues curving. Side effects like pain during cold days, etc... As a kid, learning that I'll have to undergo an operation scared me. We even have no finances to afford thousands just for the metal/steel alone aside from the operating bills but my parents are searching for ways to help us financially. With other relatives and also my own decision, no operation was done. Whew... (sigh) 😥 Maybe it's God's will. Thank God ☺

I grew up in a normal setting of environment. In a family where I am loved and accepted.

Just starting to open up ^_^
