Elon Musk introduced us the news about his plans for colonizing Mars in a typical style, saying fairly grandiose goals and an ambitious plan to reach that point.

SpaceX’s Director-General revealed new details in a speech delivered at the International Astronaut Congress in Adelaide, Australia. This was a renewal of the same speech from last year, where Musk revealed his big new rocket that he wants to use to colonize Mars (Interplanetary Transport System or ITS).

This time the name ITS was noticeably unimportant, but the dream is still here. Musk now calls the BFR (Big F * cking Rocket) rocket, according to the original nickname. Now the idea is BFR to be the main focus of SpaceX and says the first launch will be in 2022, and a human expedition in 2024.

“We want to make our current vehicles redundant,” says Musk. BFR would replace the current Falcon 9, Dragon and Falcon Heavy vehicles on SpaceX. Like last year, the ultimate plan remains to transfer 100 people with one BFR on a single tour to the surface of Mars. A large shuttle-like vehicle is launched with a multi-use drive from Earth and can then land on Mars. With more launches, Musk has a vision to establish the city of Mars.

Also, Raptor footage was shown, which will be the new BFR rocket engine that develops SpaceX. They showed one engine burning for 40 seconds, the time it took to land on Mars. BFR will use 31 of these engines.

The big criticism of last year was about funding. How will SpaceX allow this gig, the creation of the largest rocket in history? Musk addressed this this time, noting that a small version of the BFR would have a large range of functions.

“She can do everything she needs for activities in the Earth’s orbit,” Musk said.

He says the BFR can be used to convey people through the planet. This system can transmit people between any cities in less than an hour, while most cities would be available in about 30 minutes.

Furthermore, the BFR would be used to carry people to the moon, creating a so-called Moon Base Alpha. He did not explain extensively about these plans, but said the vehicle could go and return from the moon without making a new fuel.

“The 2017 is, we have to have a lunar base so far,” Musk said. “What the hell is going on?”

In the end, the goal is to colonize Mars. The BFR would have 40 cabs in the storage area, enough to take 100 people to Mars in one flight. There would also be shelter for solar radiation storms and some part for entertainment.

Musk wants to have 2 BFR ready for launch until 2022. This would be cargo missions to the surface of Mars, to find water for future missions. Then, in 2024, he wants to launch 4 BFR – two with cargo and two with crew, to Mars.

Musk is fully convinced that five years is enough to produce the ship and launch it. “It’s not a typo,” Musk responded to the audience’s reactions. “I’m pretty sure that we can prepare the ship and launch it for five years. Five years for me seem like a long time. “

With such plans, it’s hard not to get excited. But, as always, criticism does not disappear. The costs are still unclear, and Musk is known for his ambitious plans. Is the dream sufficient to achieve it?

“I think that the essence of the future is much more exciting and interesting if we are a space civilization and a multi-planetary kind, than if we are not,” says Musk . “You want to be inspired by things, you want to wake up and think that the future will be great. I can not think of anything more exciting than going to be among the stars. “

If he clings to the plan temporarily, and succeeds in landing a Mars mission on Mars until the 2022th, it will be a good reason to think.
