I have a small present from Japan...

in #science7 years ago

My colleagues from Japan has sent to me a few presents which have arrived just yesterday.
After 4 weeks of long trip through the ocean, a big vessel arrived to Marghera's Industrial Harbor (Italy)

And inside this massive vessel we can see the Japanese "presents" duly packed:

First present, 90 Tons

Second present, around 20 Tons

Third preent, the smaller, 18 Tons.

And finally, the "Big One":

What a Monster!, 130 Tons

Believe me that once the "Big one" lift the vessel, the ship started to freely move, released from the heavy duty...

In short, inside those massive crates there are very well machined parts made of the best Japanese stainless Steel.

These parts will be assembled in a few weeks at Italy in order to build one of the biggest Superconducting Magnets in the world, a Toroidal Field Coil Magnet, which will be part of the ITER Tokamak.

"a magnetic fusion device that has been designed to prove the feasibility of fusion as a large-scale and carbon-free source of energy based on the same principle that powers our Sun and stars."

And this is part of my life as an Engineer.

I will explain you more about ITER project in the near future.

Brutal!!! i was waiting for a sushi dish as present haha

tokamak? as in fusion reactor?
Is this to hold the plasma in place?

Well, yes, actually ITER is going to be the biggest Fusion reactor ever built.

Awesome, I hope you guys succeed on this project, wind and sun can't cover all the energy needs in the foreseeable future.

And better to let the atoms behave as one than to split them right ;)
