ARE WE STILL ANIMALS? - Archaic instincts that make us aggressive, emotional and hinder our lives [PART 1]

in #science7 years ago (edited)

Hello! Wsup!

Today got something delicious for you.

Today we have a bit of controversial, psychological topic that actually relates to all of us. I am going to talk about what hinders us, human beings, in getting results & things in life that we want... or do we?

Gonna speak about deadly arrogance and beliefs we have. Beliefs that you are the smartest, the strongest and the best. Gonna mention practical ways on how to judge situations with a goal to actually become better, smarter, stronger...

INTRO

Nowadays we all use social media on daily basis & I don't know how about you but every day when I visit internet I see proof of how imperfect & ridiculous we humans are. How little rationality we have and how much we are controlled by our ancient animal instinct.

(If you cringed at this part, just bear with me for a minute... It gets better)

Every popular post on Facebook, every popular video on YouTube is often filled with pointless arguing with subtext of "I'm better than you!", "I am smarter than you!". And the deeper arguments go the more cursing and insults are involved.

From a logical point of view, these situations are completely pointless and stupid, because everyone will remain with the same point of view. The only thing that will change here is that people will waste only precious resource they have. They will waste only thing that they can't get back. They will waste their f*cking time!

What is the real cause of it? Why people act so ineffectively, so irrationally?!

I rarely hear people actually speaking about this, but the answer is quite simple. It's cuz a big part of a human being is still part animal, but not rational human. But everyone is telling you the opposite.

Homo sapiens just recently began to develop technical civilization, but hundreds of thousands of years before that, we were basically same animals as the rest of the species on the planet earth. And in order to survive between other animals, we needed animal instincts!

ANIMAL INSTINCTS

Most of the time this is the "dark side" of your soul. It is something that was very useful long time ago, but now it only hinders us.

It is anger, greed, need to eat, fuck, humiliate, etc. (basically put in 7 deadly sins here)

So why did we need it before? -> It was needed for the survival of an individual in small groups. But this doesn't work in big social groups in which we live now (nations, cities, states, etc.)

Let's get some examples:

  • Greed gave the ability for an individual to take & store food from others and survive better in natural selection.
  • Anger and wrath gave better chance to win in hierarchic battle and get the best food and most sexual partners. Again, it increased chance of survival in the past.
  • Lust (strong sexual desire) increased the chance of transferring yourself (genes) to the future through offspring (a version of immortality).

All this beautifully helped an animal to survive until he started living in big social groups, which basically in itself is a huge organism. State, nation, city - every group of people with whom you come in touch with represents "organism". The existence of this organism is dependent on all "cells" (people) from which it is composed. The better organism functions (healthier it is) the better all smaller elements feel.

So here comes the problem: Society has the form of the whole organism, but people from which it consists are in opposition and constant conflict with each other, weakening this organism.

Why?

Because this organism (whole society) emerged just recently and behavior of people didn't have time to transform from "animal" (beneficial in the past) to rational (beneficial now).
That's why animal instincts interfere with the good living of society and members (people) of this society.

So what are the main instincts that are inside of us?

Primates (we are in this group) like any other animals have many of them, but there are 3 main ones:

  1. Self-preservation (desire to grab as much as possible, even if you have everything you need. A.K.A. Greed) That's why we live in a consumer society. That's why we buy stuff all the time, more than we need. That's why often we are afraid to help other people because that means that we have to share. Instinct is against it.
  2. Sex (Instinct of procreation. The more sexual partners' man will have, the better spread of his genes) That's why pornography is so widespread. That's why so many people masturbate. That's why people "illogically" fall in love.
  3. Domination (Hierarchic instinct. Helps to occupy a better place among other people, which means get more sexual partners, more food, and power.)

If with Self-preservation and Sex instinct everything is quite clear, then with domination instinct everything is a bit more complex and we gonna delve a bit deeper here. Because it is the exact thing that gets us to think that we are "best of the best", gets us to shame others and doesn't give us the ability to judge the situation objectively.

So...

.... So we gonna stop at this point.

Yeah, I know, sorry. This feels like a bit too long of an article to write it as one and as it is a 2nd article of mine on Steemit I decided to split it into 2 parts and not make you read too much. Don't know if that's the right decision. But as a beginner don't want to put too much "text" without some feedback.

Let me know tho. I appreciate the feedback. (Gonna upload 2nd part tomorrow.)
