What is Vacuum Energy, is it free energy?

in #science7 years ago (edited)

Recently while searching the web for something refreshing and different, I came across this term "Vacuum Energy". After doing a little more reading into the matter, I found it quite interesting and decided to create a post on it, hope you all will like it.

What is vacuum energy?

vacuum

Everybody knows about vacuum, it is a whole lot of absolutely nothing. Although, everybody has a vacuum cleaner in their houses and uses it on daily basis. Vacuum cleaners doesn't involve true "vacuum" as it's difficult and much more expansive to deploy true vacuum in such rather fragile household devices. Instead vacuum cleaners uses suction technology that gives an illusion of vacuum.

In theories true Vacuum is a void that exists when we have some space filled with no air or gases or anything else not even a dirt particle. In labs scientists were able to develop whats called as "partial" vacuum in some containers by removing air and everything from an enclosed containers of heavy walls. Removing all the air and everything else reduces the atmospheric pressure on the walls of the container. As a result, the walls of the container start to collapse due to the so generated vacuum.

Now vacuum also exists outside the laboratories in outer space, miles and miles without any gases or air. It is believed that in the Universe true vacuum also exists, there's a possibility.

Vacuum Energy

So, the tension created by the vacuum in the container that was able to crush its walls like paper is some form of energy. Some scientists believe that it can be utilized as source of "free" energy at some point in the future. Further researches are being conducted in this field.

What do you think? is it possible to generate such energy with vacuum? is it going to be dangerous or useful? let me know in the comments down below.

If you watch Stargate at all, this is what their "Zero Point Modules" are...

I think it's sadly impossible, but I'm not a physicist so...

that's good to know thanks a lot for sharing and keep on posting ;)

have you looked at the implosion engine designed by Viktor Schauberger? you might find it interesting...
to my mind, vacuum energy doesn't refer to pressure differences as you describe, it's more about strange quantum effects that can occur even within a pure vacuum... photons of EM radiation can transform into shortlived electron/positron pairs that quickly destroy themselves releasing a new photon.. i think perhaps this is what people refer to when they speak about vacuum energy...if this process could be manipulated to produce an extractable electron current, energy could be drawn from the vacuum, the "virtual particles" constantly bubbling into existence within the dirac sea...

I agree and I do have an understanding on this concept but I wanted to keep the post simple. "Everybody knows about vacuum, it is a whole lot of absolutely nothing." This is how I described vacuum, haha and that container thing was just to give a functional understanding on how one could use the vacuum energy in households.

I do like your insight and deep knowledge on things like quantum particles and your understanding on how energy might behave. Thanks for commenting :)
