Going solo! Final Update: Struck Gold!

Dear GRC Diary, dear esteemed Steemians.

Today it happened! This one arrived today: gold_cpumined.png

After writing about how I launched a beacon and turned to solo crunching in september after a few months in the pool last year and minted the newbie block in late november, things have been quiet ever since (-> as expected when going solo with a low amount of 500ish GRC).

I traded a few GRC and made use of the faucets available to ease my mind when my cpid got recognised in the network after minting the newbie block as an act to fill up the long pause between transactions getting my balance up to 800 GRC.

When in the GRC pool you sort of get a feeling of stability in the form of reliable payouts and/or an accurate owed amount atleast, while in solo your very much out in the dark when running with a small balance and magnitude like I am.

However there was a flare of golden light in the tunnel when I opened up my wallet today:

by the way, the estimate never went below 10ish days, so be sure to treat it nothing more as a guideline.

That felt real good !

I got around 45ish GRC from it, which is expected for the magnitude I'm doing: I was doing like 3-4 times more mag during the summer when I ran everything non stop.

It went down because I turn the laptop off now whenever it gets dark or we go to sleep and back on when the solar panels are providing power. (Green research 🌞, yo!) .... And as a compromise for the missus for responsible use of electricity ... 😇 Or perhaps because I switched running projects that my heart is in but aren't the top in rewarding in terms of efficiency and competition. A lot of factors in the equation so who knows?

The android gang keeps running though since they're not energy demanding and are in fire and forget mode.

More great news this week for solo mining was that there is a reimbursement going on for the bugged newbie block only providing 1 GRC: https://steemit.com/utopian-io/@ifoggz/newbie-stake-loss-compensation-what-is-it-phase-1-data

After checking the original transaction detail I actually lost around 100 coins to the void this way!
For a wallet this size that's quite a big deal! But honestly I'm more interested in the 🔬🔭🔬 and the gamification of science in getting badges and statistics though, so it's just a welcome bonus.

This is the last update in my ongoing solo adventure, since I reached my goal and I feel that I said all there is to say to show that going solo is achievable and isn't the horror that people makes it up to be (albeit a real good exercise in patience for sure with a bare minimum of 500 to 1k GRC atleast, Be warned: stick to the pool otherwise.)

So yeah, things are really looking to be sparkly bright for Gridcoin, it has active development, community buzz and lot's of effort is being made to make it more user friendly. I won't even mention the value it has been accruing the past months... 😱

Congratulation, @gregan! I remember my first golden icon in the list of transactions... I was so happy!

Looking forward to more!

Awesome! So happy for you @gregan, I will be using these posts as inspiration for when I eventually go solo!

Thank you!

I really like this article. May I share it on my small personal twitter account?

Ofcourse!

well done @gregan, no looking back now, you are a solo hero!

Thanks! Not quite there yet for such an honour though 😅

Solo hero indeed!!!

Congratulations, Gregan, on your milestone. I'll be reading the other two articles on this topic as I am a bit confused as how solo mining actually works.

Congratulations! I am still in the pool and thought that my weight was still to low to go solo. This is great news! :)
I do have a question though. As I mentioned I am in the pool currently, so my wallet is only in investor mode. I haven't staked a block yet. The estimate is below 10 days since last october or something. Is it just bad luck, or do I have to advertise a beacon in investor mode as well?

Bad luck can play some part in it. The estimate stuck at 10 days for nearly a month for me and it could have been a few weeks more to get the reward.

I don't think you need a beacon to get your interest in investor mode. But if you have a few machines you can hybridize and set one solo with good enough RAC and shoot a beacon out?

I guess I will just have to be patient then :)
