Back to life?

in #science6 years ago (edited)

The last natural Pyrenean ibex, called Celia, was found dead in 2000. Then the species officially became extinct. Before its death scientists had already taken and carefully preserved DNA samples from this wild moutain goat.

They used the samples and a domestic goat's eggs to bring the Pyrenean ibex back to life.
The clone lived for only 7 minutes, it died due to physical defects in its lungs. Other cloned animals, including sheep, have been born with similar lung defects. However some scientists believe that now they could use the advanced techniques and be able to clone dinosaurs and unleash a real-life Jurrasic Park on the world.

But dinosaurs were roaming the Earth over 65 milion years ago and their DNA doesn't last that long even in teeth or bones.

In 2003 scientists excavated the sceleton of a Tyrannosaurus rex in Montana. When the helicopher was lifting the sceleton, its thigh bone broke. At the university scientists found organic material in the bone. It means that DNA might last a lot longer than we originally believed.

So maybe it is possible that we will be sharing Earth with T-rexes, but we have to remember that scientists have to work out a complete genetic map of dinosaur first and it may take decades.

Most scientists believe that the birds are distant relatives of certain types of dinosaurs, so maybe the answer lies with birds?

Jack Horner, a world famous palaeontologist at Montana State University, says ,There is now nothing to stop us bringing back dinosaurs but ourselves. Whether it is a good idea or not is another question'.
