Is this not the correct solution? For the order of operations you do parenthesis, exponents, multiple & divide, then addition & substraction. Multiplication and divide, as well as addition and subtraction are read from left to right. With that in mind here is how it is solved.
2+1 = 3 (inside the parenthesis so we do that first)
We then read left to right since we have multiplication and division.
6/2 = 3. 3*3 = 9.
The only other possible solution would be factoring in the 2 first, so it would be 2x1 + 2x3 = 6 and then do 6/6 which equals 1, but would the 2 before the parenthesis be associated with the parenthesis? I would assume it would be the equivalent of multiplying 2 x the equation inside the parenthesis.
So what you are saying is that the correct way of interpretation would be as follows:
6/ 2(2+1)
6/2 x (2+1)
3 x 3

I know I am old but not so old as 1917. Perhaps what we are seeing here is a huge difference in how to read the equation. I still see the answer as one, as the 2 is associated with a multiplication of whatever is within the parenthesis.

wouldn't the answer be 9 because in the order of operations parentheses would go first so it it 6 / 2 x 3. Then you would go left to right so 6 / 2 = 3. Then 3 x 3 = 9. Right?
