A nephew of the prominent physicist Heinrich Hertz, he learned at the colleges of Göttingen, Munich, and Berlin, and was delegated a partner in material science at the University of Berlin in 1913, where he started to work with Franck. Their tests demonstrated that when an electron strikes a particle of mercury vapor, the electron must have a specific vitality (4.9 electronvolts [eV], for this situation) all together for that vitality to be consumed by the iota.
