COVID vaxx but not COVID Associated with Higher Risk of Autoimmune Disease for Children
A retrospective and population-based cohort study conducted using electronic medical record data from insured pediatric patients in a healthcare system in Israel (n = 493,705) investigated the diagnostic incidence of several autoimmune diseases across two pre-pandemic periods starting in 2014 and during the pandemic period of 2020-22. They found that about 1% of the patients (n = 4,596) were diagnosed with a new autoimmune disease between 2014 and 2022 and this rate did not change between the pre-pandemic period and the pandemic period meaning COVID-19 itself is not associated with a higher prevalence of autoimmune diseases. A case–control analysis within the pandemic cohort found that ‘being diagnosed with COVID-19 until June 2021 (when rapid antigen tests became available) was not significantly associated with an increased risk of developing an autoimmune disease. ‘However, receiving at least one COVID vaccine was associated with a statistically significant (23%) increase in the relative risk of developing an autoimmune disease compared to pre-pandemic cohorts and a 40% higher relative risk compared to unvaxxed children in the same cohort. The absolute risk was found to be 0.2%. The average time between receiving the vaxx and new onset of an autoimmune disease was found to be about 9 months. This is around the same time a plethora of other observational research have found negative VE where the risk reduction against COVID-19 disease is not just negligible but reversed to an increased risk. While this is an observational study and thus cannot make causal inferences it is one in a growing body of evidence for increased risks of non-COVID-19 related symptoms and diseases following the COVID vaxx primary series and/or booster.
