Earthquake in Mexico: Geomagnetic storms related to Earthquakes?

in #science7 years ago (edited)

Hi Steemit, in this post I want to talk you about the relationship of solar storms with earthquakes. Can these celestial disturbances cause such an impact? Some researchers have the suspicion that if, ensuring that a strong solar activity can cause the earth to shiver. Below we will see what is known so far.

Since 2011 we have heard a lot about solar storms, because the so-called solar maximum began, which is the regular period of increased solar activity in the eleven-year cycle of the Sun. Scientific information refers to solar storms consisting of violent explosions of plasma and charged particles, called 'flashes' and, above all, 'coronal mass ejections' that emanate from the Sun. During millions of tons of plasma are expelled and spread throughout the Solar System. charged particles, along with large amount of X-rays and gamma, the most powerful radiation there is. Radiation reaches Earth in 8 minutes, as it travels at the speed of light. Fortunately, our atmosphere protects us, precisely this protection derives from geomagnetic storms. Geomagnetic storms are a major disturbance of Earth's magnetosphere, which occurs when there is a very efficient exchange of solar wind energy in the space environment surrounding Earth.

There is a suspicion that earthquakes can be activated or be more intense when the sun enters a phase of great activity. A study published by the Space and Science Research Center in Florida (USA) found a strong correlation between solar activity and major seismic and volcanic events on Earth. When the devastating earthquake struck Japan on March 11, 2011, the Sun had a strong activity, which generated even more popular interest in this matter. A couple of days ago an earthquake shook Mexico with a magnitude of 8.1 on the Richter scale, but something that few people know, is that the same day was in full development a severe solar geomagnetic storm, type G-4 Kp8. Could this have something to do? It is still unknown.

On the other hand, scientists of the US Geological Survey (USGS) also conducted an investigation to determine the relationship of these phenomena and found that "it seemed that" solar flares no matter how grand and spectacular they are nor coronal mass ejections, can cause earthquakes on the planet. It is noteworthy that the authors acknowledge that the outcome of their inquiries is not conclusive. Since they did not find a relationship, but neither can ensure that it does not exist.

The investigations of the relationship between geomagnetic storms and the strong shaking of the planet, not having conclusive results, do not allow to clarify this unknown, maintaining the suspicions about the relation of these phenomena. What do you think? Do you think it's just coincidence or can this really be connected??
