Sambo is a modern martial art created in the Soviet Union to train its army with an innovative combat method. To carry out this task, a group of martial artists was organized to investigate the most efficient martial arts in Europe and Asia and combine them in to one, eliminating unnecessary movements and maintained the efficient ones.

So this team, mainly conformed by Vasily Oshchepkov (Black Belt in Judo, was trained by Jigoro Kano, founder of judo, dies in a Gulag for being accused of Japanese spy for his relationship with Japan, for belief of working as a spy for the old empire ), Anatoly Jarlampiev and Viktor Spiridonov (Vijtor practiced wrestling and several Auclotton fights of the former Soviet Union) These are some of the main ones among many others, the sambo was product of a wide team of specialists and established of open fight as a system of open fight.

These specialists gathered a wide variety of techniques from a wide range of countries such as Judo and Jiu-jitsu from Japan, wrestling and Greco-Roman from southern Europe, Kurash from Uzbekistan, Chidaoba from Georgia, Mongolian Mongolian fighting and different indigenous fighting of Eastern Europe that are little known but keep their voices mediating the techniques exercised in the competitions of the sambo (although there are also world champions of Kurash and Chidaoba).

Sambo schools are formed with tendency and inclinations toward a specific type of fighting or martial art, founding schools with a tendency towards a judo working more a refinement of techniques or schools with a tendency towards wrestling with a more powerful physical preparation. Currently Sambo has a more homogenised state but nevertheless the trends are still noticeable. It is one of the most practiced fights in the world unlike judo allows more freedoms of techniques and grip, not limited to the traditional grip having several modalities (Georgian grip, two against one, grip by one side) expanding more options in combat and thus have a better reaction.

In the world of Sambo there are great fighters who have won victories in different competitions, for example Fedor Emilianenko, Oleg Taktarov, Islam Makhachev. Sambo is growing worldwide and is being an ex-candidate to join the Olympic Games.
