Gentle endangered creatures.
Countless innocent rhinos lose their lives every day to ruthless poachers. We are lucky enough to have these beautiful animals still roaming free in many of our game reserves.
It is always exciting to come across small families of rhinos as we drive around the Kruger Park. They are often tucked away behind bushes as if they know their lives depend on staying out of sight.
We have had, however, rewarding sightings of these almost prehistoric beasts grazing peacefully out in the open.
It is sad to think that future generations may only be able to view them in picture books. This is a rare sighting of a Black Rhino, who looks as though he had an altercation with a competitor. This cheeky chap actually took exception to our car and started to charge it! Needless to say we didn't stick around to see who would win!
This White or Square-lipped rhino eventually ventured out from behind a bush. I guess curiosity got the better of him. Sometimes one wonders who is observing who!
Rhinos love water, especially when they have the chance to wallow in it. This picture was take at the waterhole in the hills behind Berg-en-Dal Camp in the Kruger Park. It is a favourite spot to observe rhinos drinking or wallowing at the end of a hot summer day!
They are beautiful animals. I'm sure by now most of them know you by name :)
