Make Your Own Taco Seasoning to Save Money, Personalize Taste
From time to time I like Mexican food. A summer evening decided to make tacos for dinner. When I looked in the pantry, I realized I did not have a taco seasoning packet, and complained. I just went to the grocery store and I did not go again. The only solution to this problem was to make my own seasoning mix.
Taco seasoning is a combination of chili powder, ground cumin, garlic powder, and sodium. While sodium-reduced brands are available, some are too salty for my taste. chili powder makes this Mexican mix, but I think cumin, with its special flavor, smoked, is the most important ingredient. What's the fucking anyway?
According to the website of feeding, cumin is the dried seeds of a plant related to parsley family. It is available whole or ground. The site goes on to say that the word is pronounced Kuh-Mihn, and I realized that I was wrong to say. If I made my own seasoning cumin I wondered how I would need.
I found dozens of recipes on the Internet and many looked like. All I needed was a recipe starter, something that could change, and I chose a spoonful of the site. As usual, I reduced the amount of salt because I am sensitive to salt. When the salt is reduced, it is necessary to compensate with additional herbs or spices. So instead of paprika plain, I used smoked paprika. I turned garlic powder, cumin doubling, added a pinch of pepper seasoned, and a pinch of cinnamon.
Because they had these ingredients on hand, I saved money for gasoline and grocery money. From now, you can bet I'll make my own taco seasoning. This mixture tastes good hamburgers, pork chops and chicken. You can enjoy a good fish, but I've never made fish tacos because we prefer beef. While you're there, you might as well double or triple the recipe and keep some on the platform for future use.
Here is my recipe for taco seasoning.
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon smoked coffee (or regular) paprika
3/4 teaspoon of iodized salt with 33% less sodium (or less)
A pinch of pepper seasoned
A pinch of cinnamon
Mix the ingredients in a small pot. Getting rid of the pressing pieces with the back of a spoon. Mix well. Put the lid on the jar and shake to combine more. Taco meat, cook a pound of ground beef in a skillet over medium heat until ready (I use 90% of lean meat.) Add 3/4 cup water. Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, until liquid is evaporated almost. (Some liquid will remain.) Pour into taco shells and top with shredded Mexican cheese or cheddar Co-Jack, lettuce, chopped tomatoes and nonfat sour cream. Spend your favorite salsa or taco sauce. This recipe makes 6-8 beef tacos.
