Sort of reminds me of my dad's favorite saying, and it has taking me 50 years to put it into practice in my daily life:

Son, live every day as if it were your last day on earth, but plan as if you are going to live forever. —My Dad

Well maybe, just the first part of my dad's advice is germaine to this passage.
