Sustainable Food Movements After Maria

Now more than ever exists the need to mobilize the agricultural sector in Puerto Rico. With farms in their entirety wiped out after the storm, the urgency to recuperate food production is great.

There are several groups dedicated to sustainable organic food on the island who can use your help. Below I have listed a few links to some of fundraiser campaign aimed at ensuring food sovereignty throughout the island.

Please support any of these campaigns if you can. Recovery efforts will be long term and any other campaigns that come to my attention will be added to the list below.

Thank you and please share.

El Departamento De La Comida - http://www.americasforconservation.org/mx-pr-resilience-fund - A grassroots organization powering local regional-food systems including sustainable farming practices and farmers markets. They are committed to providing food and relief for those affected due to the devastation of Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria. PAYPAL DIRECT TO DEPARTAMENTO DE LA COMIDA: [email protected]

La Cosecha - https://www.gofundme.com/rescue-prs-sustainable-agriculture - Our plan is to use these funds for an integrative farm restoration initiative that includes stipends for repairs for our own farm and those of many other members (20+) of the local agroecological movement.

Visit Puerto Rico - https://www.gofundme.com/5markets - After close deliberation we found that cashflow for farmers is the fastest way to help them get back on their feet to start planting seeds that are destined to grow within three months. Right now they need the economical stability they had from Farmer’s Markets.

Boricuá de Agricultura Ecológica de Puerto Rico - https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1664755656881881&id=204425456248249 - Boricuá de Agricultura Ecológica de Puerto Rico is a 28 year old grassroot organization that works and promotes agroecology within the food sovereignty struggle. Boricuá, is the official Chapter in Puerto Rico of the international pesant movement: La Vía Campesina (LVC)- Coordinadora Latinoamericana de Organizaciones del Campo (CLOC). Boricuá, is a network of peasants (campesinos/as), farmers, farm workers, educators and activists that are deeply involved in a national social justice movement that builds a sustainable agriculture platform for small and medium scale peasants and farmers.

Vermonters For PR - https://www.facebook.com/VermontersforPR/ - Most Vermonters have a great respect for local food and the hard work our farmers do to produce the quality foods we love. Please help us in helping this brave community rebuild their food systems.
