I need some help!

in #publishing6 years ago

I've finally collected enough of my drunk history blogs that I'm ready to pull the trigger on self-publishing them on Amazon. I'm in desperate need of some help from the Steemit brain-trust. To make it worth your while, I'll give a free copy of my book when it comes out to anyone with some slam dunk feedback here.

I'm having a hard time coming up with a title. So far I have "Super Happy Fun Facts" or maybe "Damn History, You Crazy!" I'm wondering though if I should go with something a little more literal like, "Weird History Behind Everyday Stuff" or "Fact is Stranger Than Fiction."

Quick shoutout to @scan0017 for being super supportive of my work and taking the time to sit down with my manuscript and cover it in chicken scratch. Thanks for the heartache buddy.

I'm also struggling with my book cover. I'm not super strong on graphic design and what sells books but I do know EVERYONE judges a book by its cover, especially on Amazon.

I'm leaning towards these two stock images but I am open to any and all feedback or suggestions.

Also, If anyone has any authority on fonts for book covers I would humbly be open to any knowledge you could drop on me.

Sort:

I rarely say never but never use more than two fonts on a book cover and if you use two, have one serif and one sans serif.

This article might give you some good ideas:

That link is brilliant. Thanks!

I like the second cover. What about Is This What It Is?

Don't know why that title popped into my head. As for the self publishing part. If you need any assistance there in general, you could always two up the author @dreemit. She did one at the tail end of last year :0)

I'm absolutely going to go check out dreemit. I need all the help I can get. I've self published a few things already but they all got buried immediately because I did everything wrong. Thanks for the input.

No worries, good luck!

I definately like the first book cover over the second.. good luck . !tip

I was really on the fence on the first one but when it popped up as the thumbnail for this post it really jumped out. It's definitely in first place right now.

How about something simple like "Who Knew?" or "The History Teachers don't Teach in School" or "Weird History Mad Goat Style"?

I'd like to use some kind of Paul Harvey tag line like, "The rest of the story your teachers left out." I just need to flesh it out more.
Thanks for the input.

I can't believe that in all the time I've been here, I've only just seen your work for the first time! And only because I was looking to find what @scan0017 was doing these days. Great to hear you're self-publishing. I've worked for a publisher, but no books, so, unfortunately, wouldn't be able to help you much. The two font thing is absolutely true though. I know that (well, great help am I right?). As for a book title...I kinda liked Scan's ideas...but inspired by his (not very original though) I thought of: History, too cool for school. Or something like that. Well, anyway, I'm glad I found you here, will be keeping an eye on you and thanks @scan0017, for leading me here 🤗

Awesome ! 👏
Glad you received the notes 📝 on your manuscript, I had a blast reading it (twice!)

Would you write a post on all the mistakes you made self-publishing? Some of us aspiring writers out here would love to learn some mad goat wisdom in that regard.

I'm writing (and editing) three hours a day, and hope to have finished both books by the end of the summer.

Potential book titles:
"History Lessons TOO HOT for Teacher"
"History Lessons Too Hot for High School"
"T*ts are Awesome, So is History. Coincidence?"

You may want to think about a collage on the front cover with many of the topics you cover in your book: Guns 'n Roses, witches, the bible, Mother Theresa, old pharmacy bottles of laudanum and opium, bootleggers, Al Capone, Sarah Maclachlan, goat milk, marijuana leaf, etc.

Best of luck in this journey, keep us all posted on your progress!
