Games improve our brain performance

in #psychology7 years ago

Games can improve our abilites and skills in real life! The researchers measured the cognitive abilities of 72 volunteers. They were evaluated. Ability to quickly switch between tasks, thinking about complex problems, and resolving them at a specific time.

The subjects were divided into three groups, two of which played StarCraft's strategy game on different levels, and the third one was The Sims, a game that did not require memorizing or thoughtful tactics.

The researchers found that those who played StarCraft were quicker and more accurate in cognitive tasks than those who played The Sims.

Previous research has shown that action games can accelerate decision-making. Our research indicates that strategic games can increase the ability to think creatively and to learn from one's own mistakes, "concludes Dr Brian Glass of Queen Mary's University.

Studies also indicate that cognitive flexibility, one of the components of human intelligence, is not static, but can be trained and perfected even using such entertaining methods as computer games.

According to prof. Brady Love from UCL: Cognitive flexibility is a feature that varies between people of all ages. Fictitious Sherlock Holmes was able to engage in several threads at the same time and react swiftly to changing conditions.

Creative thinking, unconventional requires flexibility. The study showed that volunteers who played StarCraft at the most advanced level were the ones who solved their tasks best. Now before the researchers, another challenge - to understand which element of the game is beneficial to the human brain, and whether the changes made in this way are permanent.
