The development of self-esteem does not make you over-confident, complacent or vain. It just allows you to accept and appreciate your talents, abilities or personal attributes. Self-concept has several links to self-esteem. If you constantly see yourself as a failure or a loser, it just feeds negative self-esteem and creates a negative attitude.

Healthy self-esteem requires a certain confidence about you. Self-confidence is the belief that you can succeed and be capable. Self-confidence is a perception of the self, just like self-esteem, but it relates to abilities. Self-esteem is, however, related to the individual’s perceived worth or value.

You need a certain level of confidence to be a positive person and to develop further. It is important to know, that people with healthy self-esteem are not overly confident and they see their abilities realistically.

We need to evaluate ourselves regularly and critically. Self-assessment needs to be accurate to offer us any help. Try to describe your weaknesses by using a non-pejorative and accurate language, which is specific and try to find corresponding strengths. The essence of self-esteem is having compassion for you, by forgiving mistakes, not having unreasonable expectations.

Self-esteem connects to values. When you have positive values, they allow positive self-valuation. The characteristics of good values are that they are flexible, realistic, life enhancing and based on one’s own decision.

High self-esteem can work as a resource built from positive feelings that can be useful under certain conditions. It is also associated with more initiative. These two characteristics seem to be the best advantages of high self-esteem. It is helpful to focus on understanding ourselves accurately and honestly instead of only trying to build a high level of self-esteem.

Self-esteem in this sense could provide valuable functions and helpful (yet not always pleasant) information about the individual instead of an inflated sense of self. An accurate self-evaluation could save a lot of time and effort, as well as disappointment.
