DEVELOP GOOD COMMUNITY RELATIONSHIPS
What are community relations? The simplest definition is how do you get along with your neighbors. Do the people in your neighborhood help one another on a regular basis? The relationships that you want to build are neighbor helping neighbor. The best example that I can remember happened right across the road from my shop.
One afternoon a really drunk driver spun around in the intersection and took out about 100 feet of the neighbors goat pen fence. Many of the neighbors were coming home from work and most stopped to help. This is a short story because by the time that the police had the driver securely in the backseat of the patrol car the neighbors had fixed the fence to keep the neighbor’s goats in their pen and off the road. One fellow went home and got a couple of posts, another got some wire and they borrowed tools from me. We all built a new fence. That fence stands today at least five years later. I live in a great neighborhood. This is the kind of relationship that we need to survive in today’s environment.
How do you develop this kind of a neighborhood? I like to think of community relations as an action verb. These relationships are built by doing. You go visit your neighbor across the fence. If someone needs help you volunteer before being asked. If your neighbor is going to be gone for a while you keep an “eye” on his place. When you start doing these things then others see how nice that was and will do the same thing for someone else. After this action gets started it takes on a mind of its own and the whole neighborhood changes. Peo-ple become more tolerant of one another and shortly are sharing tools and garden stuff with one another.
Good relationships with neighbors is a two way street. If you borrow something, then you return it in as good or better condition than when you borrowed it. If you break it you fix it or get the owner a new thing.
When times get rough having a good relationship with your spouse is absolutely neces-sary. You need to work on this relationship throughout your live. Be positive with your spouse as they need encouragement too. Be very careful of how you criticize their actions.
When times get rough this is one of the fundamental items necessary for survival. Just do it.
