I think power corrupts.

My ex-girlfriends best friend used to be a groupie. She collected famous people like autographs. She was always out at a party or jumping on a tour bus. I bet celebrities saw it as the perk of celebrity.

She saw it as the perk of anonymity.

Fame is to power what heroin is to methadone. You know deep down that all the screaming fans and the lines of people waiting to sign your book isn't true power. It's ephemeral. For this brief time they come to bask at your greatness, to worship at the altar of your talent and you get to bask in their adulation.

You have both ceased to be people.

Many of us were born unattractive. High school fame was not for us. Sex was something only cool kids did. Deep down I am still that child people only wanted to be in the same room with if we were rolling dice and playing D&D.

And then everyone wanted to be.

If I had fame and power, I would be a monster.

Gary Numan married Gemma O'Neill, a member of his fanclub in 1997. They are still happily married. Not everyone is a monster.
