Polygamy Marriage is defined as the approved social pattern in which two or more persons come together to establish a family. Traditional tribal societies, Hindus, Muslims, and Christians view marriage as an important aspect that leads to the development of humankind. All assume that marriage only takes place in such an instance when a love relationship exists between two different people.

Polygamy is also defined as a form of marriage in which a man, as the head of the family, can have more than one wife at the same time. It is also defined as the other side of the coin when it comes to (Monogamy)a man marrying just a wife. Polygamy is also represented and discussed as an expanded family structure that is traced to the type of marriages in which a husband has two or even more than two wives.

THREE MAJOR CAUSES OF POLYGAMY AND REASONS

• Economics reasons : In most cases in African societies, people and persons who were economically or financially stable would marry more than one wife because It was regarded as a symbol realizing economic or financial success.

• Barrenness : Children are often believed to usher in joy of the family. The desire for children is hence, one of the main reasons as to why people marry and some get married. Sometimes It occur in cases where a wife does not bear children, so that gives a man the courage to marry the second wife in search of children. The problem might be that the man himself is not in a position to sire children but often the women are blamed.

• Migrants labor : When men are transferred to work in towns, cities, or places far away from home, African traditional societies allow them to have another woman who will stay with him to care for him and bore him more children while away from home for work reasons.
  
  Polygamous marriages are the most popular in the rural regions and are taking place in illiterates or low educated peoples. Polygamy has reflected various differences on the couples where couples relationship will be more traditional than in monogamous marriages. Men are the masters in a family in particular in the developing nations and rural regions. Men can take decisions at any time to marry more than ONE to TEN wives if they want. Marriage is more locus of reproduction in African countries.

 DISADVANTAGES SURROUNDING POLYGAMY 

• One of the disadvantage of polygamy is due to the fact that it leads to divided attention and love among couples. For this reason wives will start competing for their husband’s love and attention and that might lead to conflicts and misunderstandings.

• Hatred and jealousy are some of the weapons used in a polygamous home, This is because these women will be jealous with one another and this could disrupt the marriage and allow conflict arise in the instance of where the first wife thinks the second wife is receiving the most love and attention from her husband.

• One of the other disadvantages surrounding polygamy is it will lead to extra marital affairs which is not just dangerous to the wife but other wives and their husband.

• The other disadvantage of polygamy rises in the event that the husband is no longer having stable income like he used to. In this scenario or situation the husband would find it very difficult and disappointing to take good care of all his wives as expected and that might also take a bad effect on the children.

• CONCLUSION : Polygamy has bad effect on Women and Children and has made a lot of Women lost their self - esteem among co- wives, So many women are suffering from physical and emotional problems and pain, while some of the children are vulnerable to failure and negativity due to their lack of of education.

• PERSONAL ADVICE - If your mother made a mistake of having you for a polygamist or into a polygamous home, I will advice you to not “allow your background keep your back to the ground” Remember, If you catch hell, don't hold it and If you are going through hell because of your parents mistakes don't stop or give up on your dreams, Just keep going And strive as much as you can to make yourself, good friends and your society proud of your accomplishments.
