An outside perspective on DACA - no more dreamers?
As an outsider i won't even speculate on whether DACA was a good thing for US citizens or not, that's up to them to decide. One thing that's for sure is that the media, within or outside the US, would paint it that only a monster would do such a thing to destroy the prospects of some youngsters.
What troubles me the most is that stuff like this with far reaching consequences, well-intended as it may be, gets introduced circumventing congress and the whole public discourse seems to brush over this like it's nothing even noteworthy. This is a very worrisome trend going on not only in the US. We've seen European countries entering wars without parliamentary consent or overview (turned out there was no UN mandate either).
The other thing is about giving incentives to disbehaviour. Attaining green card status is not an easy thing, but crossing the borders illegally i would be eligible for extra treatment, status and bonus?
If that was such a good thing, getting a majority in congress to vote for it and passing proper legislative process should be easy, right?
Meanwhile in another continent, several major European coutries are voting for a new government. One hot prospect (first world country, strong economy) said that introducing more plebiscite elements would be harmful. The other one, who is in office right now said the days of popular sovereignty were over. Instead the government would act on ideals that most people would get on board with, assuming that this is for the good of all people. History books are full of examples about how that might turn out. In a better world or society, people wouldn't get away with this and even get a chance of being elected into political power.
Well, why do i digress and ramble about that and what's it to do with DACA, you might ask? I would humbly ask of you, regardless on which side you are on this matter, to consent that proper democratic process must be followed. Bonus points if you realize, that most people have good intentions but different perspectives to go about it.
