Great post @greoryth, agree with you on this one:

"Why can't we take more responsibility for our own lives instead of calling on government to make our lives better?"

In my first job I was earning a fifth of what I'm getting now after only five years. It was a crappy salary indeed but I needed experience and I can thank that job for being where I am today.
