Dutch Politician Geert Wilders Falling in Polls as New Right-Wing Party Emerges
(PC - dw.com) Geert Wilders
Geert Wilders, the right-wing, anti-immigrant, anti-Islam, anti-austerity leader of the PVV (Party for Freedom) in the Netherlands, is facing trouble as his party loses fervor amid the growth of a relatively new party. Forum for democracy (FvD), a right-wing eurosceptic party led by Thierry Baudet is seeing a massive spike in the polls, as the PVV stagnates and drops in projected seat margins.

This may not come to a surprise as Baudet appeals to voters as a more rational alternative to Wilders, a controversial politician that has advocated to ban the Quran, crash and burn the European Union, and end all austerity in the Netherlands. Baudet is also opposed to the European Union and wants a referendum for Dutch people to decide on its membership; however, rather than destroying every aspect of the EU, wishes to continue its old purpose as the European Economic Cooperation, working to building the economies of each individual country rather than take sovereignty over members. He is against mass unskilled immigration but does not advocate to ban Muslims or any other group specifically. He is against the idea of multiculturalism, however, does not advocate for discrimination against Moroccans in the country.
Baudet also provides a more electable and reliable alternative for people politically aligning with right-wing politics. Wilders controversial nature as a rabble-rousing politician and bad record working in previous coalitions has led to all other parties in the Netherlands refusing to work with his party, and a large portion of voters sympathetic to him voting for alternative parties. He is turned the PVV into an indefinite an opposition party, that will likely never play a role in government. Baudet encourages intellectual debate and is working to position himself as an appealer to the middle-class and college educated people in the Netherlands with similar concerns to him. Wilders strategy has always been to cater to the base of lower class Dutch citizens, sometimes alienating higher education voters with his antics.
