Political analysts are still puzzled why Daw Aung San Suu Kyi would choose the current Hluttaw speaker to resign and take over the presidency.
“During the past two years, the legislature actions in checking on the government are not very encouraging. The remaining two years is the crucial period for it,” said political analyst U Yan Myo Thein.
Changing the person who is leading the Hluttaw during important times is barely reasonable,” he added. “If someone not from NLD is appointed as Hluttaw chairman, the legislative agenda of the administration would be weakened.”
Under those conditions, if U T Khun Myat, who is assumed to be a loyal follower of Thura U Shwe Mann, is appointed as speaker, disputes within the legislature are likely to arise, a political analyst said.
“It is possible that the role of Legal Affairs and Special Cases Assessment Commission would become bigger,” Yan Myo Thein said. “There may be more disagreements between civilian and Tatmadaw MPs. The commission should only advise the Hluttaw and should reduce their involvement in legislation.”
