Preface: I was thinking of writing about a different topic today but I can’t get this out of my mind. Last night took me completely off guard.
I mistakenly thought that things were going great
Between us and hoped it wasn’t too late
For you to come to and see me beside you
What I wasn’t expecting was you looking at her too
Bundled up in bed, sharing a laugh or kiss or two
Me reading on my phone, you answering emails, what’s new?
It was a habit, a thing, we both were used to
But when I turned my head, it was her face on screen for you
A drop in my stomach, a frog in my throat
I thought I could handle it, the rocking of the boat
Turning my back to gain my composure
Fiercely I blinked to dispel the gathering moisture
It’s a whole new year and yet there is no new development
I am starting to think that maybe this is just not meant
I have given you my heart, I have given you my all
But all you have given me is a wakeup call.
