Smoke

in #poetry7 years ago

You said,
You were going to stop
Last pack , you promised
Last one , your heart whispers as you breathe in

Promises to your self
Were almost a bigger addiction
Than the nicotine left on your lips
From your last last one

Almost, almost
One more huff
Since smoke's your friend
You're welcomed back
With its embrace

Close your eyes
Blind them too
So you can't see
How much you'll lose

One more puff
And smoke's your friend
You're always welcome
In its embrace

Huff and Puff
Blow them away
Conscience you've set aflame

Open another pack of last ones
Poison your lungs one last time
Till you run out of lighter fluid
Till you go to buy more

Of course you said again
You had wanted to stop
Hell, this could be the last pack
Then again, this breath could be the last

Nicotine's a villain
One who gave you Stockholm Syndrome
One who saw to it that you fell
Right back where you started
Just as soon as you turned around

Almost, Almost
Fight your eyes
Keep them wide
You've always been stronger
Than the smoke

Fight your hand
That reaches for more
Slowly surely
You will stop

Till one day
No more puffs
Since smoke's a fiend
You'll fight yourself until you win
