“Tracks”

Those track marks on your arms?
They don’t tell your whole story
Just like my plastic, plastered smile
Couldn’t possibly tell mine.

Why are we content to guess the gaps?
I know we don’t want to tell our tragic tales:
Asking questions strips us naked and
Secret shame tells us we’ve failed.

But we’re stronger together;
If we can see past the lie, our stories are really the same.
Abused then turned abusers;
Sometimes to others but always against ourselves.

Broken, tossed out, left for dead
Till the bottom shook our senses straight.
The End says it’s just another beginning,
And we need others to help us change our fate.

Your tracks say we live in different ‘hoods.
Since when does pain have an address?
Maybe a different key, but it’s the same damn song
And neither of us were the first to sing it.

Can we join forces?
Can we see past the tracks?
Maybe our wandering roads explore different sides of the same coin.
Maybe our future has our stories intertwined.

Whatever comes before us
I believe there is a greater reality.
I await your sacred trust; release your layers and
Reveal your soul’s authenticity.
