Ocean in view
September evening, the sun behind clouds
our feet in the Wellfleet sand,
behind the dune grass
and fences, seaweed under our heels
breeze from the bay on our skin
the ripple of the waves, I saw
it in your irises too, the depths
like the black in your pupils
calling to me
something broke under your feet, a
limestone or something washed ashore
you walked ahead and I gathered
the pieces,
the texture of the rock
ensnared me, how it worked
inward like a maze
I sat on the stairs
with my head in my hands
wondering the hours
until your return
The sunlight hits these clouds
like it found stained glass
layer after layer
the rays scattered around, dark
orange and faded blue,
I know we saw the same light
