Schoolyard Crush

Straight brown hair
tied in a sloppy bun.
Her knuckles,
white with passion
clutching the large ball.

His focus never wavered
the loose striped shirt
below her golden earrings
two small flags
falling from her hips.

On his command
away it went, and
so did she, through
the dust and
small scratching hands.

Into the chaos,
she ran headfirst,
faster than anyone.
She found the goal line
and turned her head.

His only clue
was a glint from her ear.
Right on target
the ball sailed
into her outstretched hand.
