Read your poem aloud to someone else - if you can. You start to build an image and then it stutters. I keep saying this to everyone - read the poem aloud, listen to where it fails and where it soars. Be your own most damning critic - if you want to improve and you are not just writing for upvotes.

Most people who fail as poets, do so because they think poetry needs clever or smart words and images. It doesn't, it needs to speak from your heart to the heart of your reader. Don't let cleverness get in the way.
