Ajuga : an impressive appearance

Zantedeschia, from the Araceae family, is a striking plant. This perennial has about eight species. They grow mainly in Africa, from Nigeria to South Africa. People often call them calla lilies. This is because of their unique flowers and leaf shapes. Zantedeschia is pretty and useful. Some types have edible leaves. The flowers are great for wedding bouquets.

Zantedeschia plants look impressive. They can grow from 100 to 250 cm tall. The leaves grow from the base. They are shaped like a heart with a pointed end. Leaves can be 15-45 cm long and up to 20 cm wide. They are usually a rich, dark green. Some may have different colors mixed in.

The flowers grow on a stalk. They have a large, tube-shaped covering that opens wider at the top. Flowers can be different colors. Yellow stalks have white, yellow, or pink coverings. The flowers are 50 to 80 cm long. This makes them good for bouquets and other flower arrangements.

Be careful, though. The leaves have toxins. These toxins can bother your mouth and throat. They can also make pets like dogs and cats sick.

To grow zantedeschia, follow some simple steps. Water moderately. In summer, water once a week. Use small amounts of water. In hot weather, water twice a week. Water very little in winter. Fertilize the plant while it is growing. Use a liquid fertilizer on the leaves monthly from March to September. You can also use other fertilizers.

Zantedeschia needs good, but not direct, sunlight. An east or west window is best. If there is not enough light, use special plant lights.

The plant rests in the fall. This lasts until late February or early March. Keep the bulbs cool during this time. Dig them up and store them at 4-5 degrees Celsius.

The amount of moisture in the air is not too important. But, spraying the plant in winter can help it grow bigger flowers. Zantedeschia usually grows from dividing the plant. But you can also grow it from seeds.

This plant can get some diseases and pests. Root rot can happen if you water too much. Pests include scale insects, aphids, thrips, and spider mites. Zantedeschia is strong if you take care of it well.
