Pickleball Rage: When the Ball Becomes a Weapon

Pickleball is supposed to be a fun, social game—an intense yet enjoyable way to get some cardio in while smacking a wiffle ball around. But let me tell you, nothing raises my blood pressure faster than some overzealous try-hard aiming that damn ball straight at my head.

Let’s get one thing straight: I play hard. I play to win. But I also play with a level of control and respect for the game. Some people, though? They treat pickleball like it’s dodgeball in a prison yard, blasting shots at full speed with zero regard for anyone’s safety.

Now, I get it—sometimes a ball goes wild. You go for a fast drive, misjudge the angle, and it accidentally sails toward someone’s face. That’s just part of the game. But there’s a difference between an accidental shot and someone deliberately trying to take your head off like they’re firing a cannon.

What really grinds my gears is when these head-hunting players act like it’s all in good fun. “Oh, it’s just part of the game!” they’ll say, grinning like a lunatic while I’m seeing stars. Meanwhile, I’m gripping my paddle, debating if I should return the favor with a well-placed smash straight at their kneecaps.

I know I’m not alone in this. Pickleball is growing fast, and with that comes a mix of players—some with actual skill, and others who think power equals dominance. Spoiler alert: it doesn’t. The best players are the ones who can control the game, place their shots strategically, and—most importantly—know when to dial it back.

So, to the people out there treating pickleball like a combat sport: aim your damn shots better. Because next time you rocket a ball at my head, don’t be surprised when I send one right back—and I won’t be aiming for your paddle.
