The bridal veil-mushroom was first officially described by "Étienne Pierre Ventenat", a French botanist, in 1798.
Ventenat is also the figure who gave this mushroom its official name, Phallus indusiatus. In the past, this mushroom was rarely found and only taken from the wild. Hence, this mushroom is only eaten when there is a special banquet.

In China, during the Qing Dynasty, this mushroom became the favorite food of the Dowager Empress Cixi and became one of the dishes of the “Bird's Nest Eight Immortals Soup”.

It was also served at Henry Kissinger's banquet during his visit to China for diplomatic relations in the 1970s.
