For A Fist Full of Euros - New Job at Mini Hollywood
In 1964 Sergio Leone decided to film his now classic trilogy of Spaghetti Westerns in the Tabernas Desert just north of Almeria in southern Spain. It was a decision that 53 years later would lead to my first job in Almeria.
Legend has it that when the filming was finished, a group of locals, who had been employed as extras chipped in their wages and bought the set.
The ghostly wild west town became a magnet for other film-makers and countless films were set there. The set expanded and eventually, as new film studios were built nearby, was turned into a theme park.
Massively popular with tourists the park has preserved Leone's original set as a live action museum with shows twice a day.
My job is to repaint the old signs that have been worn out with time.
The film industry in Almeria continues to grow, and far beyond the western genre. The latest buzz to surround the city was the filming of last seasons Game of Thrones.
