Merlin : A rather small falcon
The Merlin is a small, quick-flying falcon that is often found across the northern forests of North America and Eurasia. It is a common nesting bird in these areas. The bird mainly feeds on small birds, which it catches while flying fast through the air.
Usually, Merlins live in wild places. However, since around 1960, they have become a regular sight in many towns on the northern prairies. In these towns, they build their nests and stay through the winter. They rely heavily on House Sparrows for food during the colder months.
The small, energetic falcon has a dark back and a lighter underside with streaks on its belly. Its plumage color can change based on where it lives. It mainly catches birds in flight for food.
This bird is found in different places, from fields and open forests to coastal areas with shorebirds. It flies strongly and with pointed wings, making quick and steady wingbeats.
