Un pomeriggio a Pitigliano - Street photography

Ho un rapporto molto strano con la fotografia. Ciò costituisce, da sempre, un grosso cruccio per i miei genitori, che da fotografi amatoriali mi hanno cresciuta con la speranza che potessi fotografare ciò che normalmente verrebbe considerato "bello" e "interessante". In realtà così è, effettivamente fotografo ciò che reputo bello e interessante, ma il mio cervello segue qualche strano algoritmo per cui non è quasi mai quel che agli altri sembra bello e interessante. E soprattutto fotografo molto poco.
Se mi trovo in un luogo suggestivo e caratteristico, non solo scatto poche foto, ma quelle che scatto sono di scarsa rilevanza. Architetture e particolari che attraggono la mia attenzione ma che non assolvono alla funzione di souvenir portato a casa come rircordo di questo o quel posto visitato.
Questo disclaimer era per dire che ho passato un bellissimo pomeriggio dal clima primaverile nel paese di Pitigliano, uno dei più bei borghi della bassa Toscana.
Abitato sin dai tempi degli Etruschi, è situato su una collina tufacea delimitata dai torrenti Lente e Meleta: una vista mozzafiato per chi sopraggiunge dalla statale n. 74.
Fu città romana e, in epoca medioevale, fu prima feudo dei conti Orsini, poi Strozzi e poi Medici.
Ogni sua parte è degna di nota, gli archi dell'acquedotto mediceo, il palazzo Orsini, gli stretti vicoli del paese, le cantine scavate nel tufo e il ghetto ebraico con la sua caratteristica sinagoga.
Mi dispiace molto di non aver fotografato nulla di tutto ciò, anche se ho visitato il paese numerose volte.
L'immagine che ho usato come copertina è un cortile di fronte ad un piccolo museo etrusco scavato nel tufo.

I have a very strange relationship with photography. This has always been a concern for my parents, amateur photographers that grew me up with the hope that I would photograph what would normally be considered "beautiful" and "interesting". Actually, I do photograph what I consider beautiful and interesting, but my brain seems guided by some strange algorithm so that it is never what is beautiful and interesting to other people as well. And above all, i don't shoot often.
If I find myself in an evocative and characteristic place, not only I take just a few photos, but those are of little relevance. Architectures and details that attract my attention, but that do not fulfill the function of souvenir brought home as a memory of this or that visited location.
This disclaimer was to say that I spent a beautiful afternoon of mite climate in the village of Pitigliano, one of the most beautiful villages of southern Tuscany.
Inhabited since the time of the Etruscans, it is situated on a tufaceous hill inbetween the Lente and Meleta torrents: a breathtaking view for those arriving from the state road n. 74.
It was a Roman city and, in medieval times, it was first castle of the Orsini counts, then Strozzi and then Medici.
Every part of it is worthy of note: the arches of the Medici aqueduct, the Orsini palace, the narrow alleys of the town, the cellars dug into the tuff and the Jewish ghetto with its characteristic synagogue.
I do regret not having photographed any of this, even though I have visited the town numerous times.
The image I used as a cover is a courtyard in front of a small Etruscan museum excavated in the tuff.

Uno dei tanti vicoli del paese conduce ad una delle tante piccole terrazze panoramiche. Questa aveva delle panchine in marmo che creavano una geometria interessante nella piazza.

One of the many alleys of the village leads to one of the many small panoramic terraces. This had marble benches that created an interesting geometry in the square.

Nella grande piazza del palazzo Orsini, mi ha destato attenzione un signore non giovanissimo che, nonostante fosse di fronte ad un bellissimo panorama, era assorto a scrivere sul suo smartphone senza alzare mai la testa.

In the large square in front of the Orsini palace, a not too young gentleman attracted my attention because he was writing on his smartphone without raising his head, inspite of the beautiful panoramic view he had before him.

Dall'ultima volta che avevo visitato il paese, ho piacevolmente constatato che il comune ha costruito un camminamento esterno alle mura, ben tenuto ed illuminato. In parte in legno ed in parte in tufo.

Since last time I visited Pitigliano, I have pleasantly found that the city has built a walkway outside the walls, well kept and well-lighted. Partly in wood and partly in tuff.
