Danger From Above

in #photography8 years ago (edited)

As we were having a look around St. Martin's Cathedral (better known as the Dom Church) in Utrecht, The Netherlands, we were being watched from above by strange creatures:

These gargoyles are found on old churches all over Europe. They often have a spout designed to convey water away from the side of a building, but their shapes traditionally illustrate evil; they provided images and symbolism for a largely illiterate population.

They still look slightly scary today.

It took some doing to get rid of the perspective distortion you get from photographing upwards, but I think I pulled it off.

Thanks for watching!

Scary though, but i think it should be, because this is part of great ancient work done by our ancient father. Nice work dude and i will look forward seeing more of this.

the Moss on these ones really adds to their character and yes scary feel which I gues sis part of what they were designed for

Even though we have some on a couple of buildings here in NYC they do not have the same character and feel as those in Europe

Awesoem job on fixing the distortion, thats something I still struggle with doing well

I like your posts ,,,
what beautiful scenery are you a photographer?

They were set up to scare off evil spirits in the Middle Ages))) We have them also in Ukraine.

These are slightly scary! But very nice shots anyways. :)

It's just wonderful. I beg you to continue.

It reminds me of the Angels and Demons scene in the Vatican.

I love the old churches or buildings with gargoyles, they are so goth and sacry, but very interesting to see ^_^

Are the gargoyles more or less in the same style where you live?

In the city where I live there's not gargoyles, because every church here is in romanesque style (older than gothic), but there are some gargoyle (even if in different style ^_^) in the Dome in Florence:
