A Journey through France: History of Loches Castle
Hi dear steemians!
Here I leave photos of the last trip to France.
The history of the castle of loches begins with the construction of a tower of 36 meters on the top of this rocky promontory. Thanks to its strategic position, the tower allowed a quick glimpse of the enemy and also served as residence for the count when he was in the region. With the passage of time, its defensive functions are reinforced by walls, towers, embrasures and machicolations.
The castle of Loches is located in the department of Indre-et-Loire, in the Loire Valley, in France. Its construction dates from the IX century. Built about 500 meters above the Indre River and with a medieval garden. The construction of the castle were coordinated by Enrique II and his son Richard Lion Heart.
These two characters saw how the Castle of Loches survived many battles and sieges by French troops. The building still shows the scars of its defensive function, very necessary in those times of war.
At the end of the Hundred Years War, Louis XI transformed the royal fortress into state prison. The cells and their bars would deprive high-level political prisoners of liberty. The prisoners began to arrive at the Castle of Loches the XV century and throughout the time, the castle was home of numerous members of the royalty Its historical protagonism continued during the Revolution of the United States, the conflict between the British colonies and Great Britain.
The castle suffered serious damage during the French Revolution (1789-1799), although in Napoleon's time it began to recover. In 1861 the Castle of Loches was officially recognized as a National Monument of History and Culture in France.
Currently, the castle and the Church of Saint-Ours, located next to it, remain open to the public, and represent an interesting visit for travelers. By virtue of its historical and cultural importance.
It is impressive to know the captivating history of the Royal City of Loches, it is a valuable testimony of military architecture. More than a thousand years of history are engraved in its solid stone, the citadel has witnessed historical events and the presence of innumerable personalities that, over time, have become our legends.
In addition, it is important to mention the medieval gardens, which made room for medicinal plants for wartime.
Thanks for watching and 'til next time!
